The Health and Disability Ethics Committees (HDECs) are Ministerial committees (established under section 87 of the Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Act 2022)(external link), whose function is to secure the benefits of health and disability research by checking that it meets or exceeds established ethical standards.

In doing so, the HDECs are required to act in accordance with the procedural rules contained in the Standard Operating Procedures for Health and Disability Ethics Committees.
